- <p> Baseball players have lately seemed to be interchangeable,
- hurled between teams like so many fastballs. Not Mike Schmidt.
- The Philadelphia Phillies third baseman played for only one club
- during his 17-year career in the National League. The high
- standards he faced were his own. Citing "a deterioration of my
- skills," the No. 7 all-time home-run hitter and winner of ten
- Gold Glove awards retired unexpectedly last week. If his fans
- were bereaved, so was Schmidt. Openly crying, he said he refused
- to hang around just to add to his statistics: "My respect for
- the game, my teammates, the fans, won't allow me to do that."
- Now, that's one for the record books.
